Signups Reminders/Update + a Query

Hi, everyone! As signups and nominations continue, we have some notes, and one query.

• As a reminder, if you request Any, you are requesting any character from the canon (NOT the tagset). Please make sure to only request Any if you are truly okay with receiving any character from the canon! Character DNWs will still be upheld for Any requests, but if you have multiple such restrictions, it would be easier and less confusing for your writer and the mods if you request specific characters instead.

• Due to the tagset issue we're encountering (more details HERE), we will be willing to add character tags to requests and offers after signups close. This is meant to accommodate people who sign up close to the deadline, but we will have a 12-hour grace period where anyone can ask to have character tags added. That being said, we will NOT be reopening signups once they have closed, so please make sure to get your signup in on time!

And our query, regarding the tagset:

• Dragonriders of Pern - If you nominated Tekyl or Jellim, or are otherwise familiar with the books, can you confirm that these characters actually exist in the canon? Could they be misspelled? (We suspect Tekyl may be T'Kul, but are unsure about Jellim.) These tags are currently part of the tagset, but will be removed if we receive no confirmation.

I've been involved in exchanges for 25+ years. Every one I've ever done, as far as I know, saw "Any" as being "any nominated characters" not any character in the whole canon, nominated or not. Why are you doing it this way? It's only bound to sew confusion, isn't it?

Lots of exchanges do things differently from other exchanges. The parameters for what makes a feature work for an exchange aren't that other exchanges do it, it's that it works well for the exchange. Since this is the first time this exchange is even running, why not play with that feature? Also the way I see it, it's not that different from exchanges that match on fandoms instead of on characters; you're saying you'll take anything from the fandom as long as it involves a character and doesn't hit your DNW's. As somebody who likes a bunch of small fandoms with ensemble casts, I love this interpretation of "Any" and I hope that, when combined with the low stakes of a drabble, I might actually get some bites from those media sources for once.

Using Any in this way is an experiment, which may or may not work out. However, we wanted to try it because we think it fits the character of the exchange. With something as small as a drabble, participants can be interested in writing/receiving characters they otherwise might have hesitations about. Multifandom Drabble only matched on fandoms; our approach doesn’t go that far, but still allows people to easily opt into a wide range of characters instead of having to nominate/signup for them all.

As for it potentially being confusing, we’ll continue to emphasize this point on the comm and, before sending out assignments, we’ll check over signups for people who might have misunderstood/made a mistake.

Oh shoot, the Pern nominations are mine. Tekyl is Kylara and T'bor's eldest child, and Jellim is Mirrim and T'gellan's son. Neither gets more than passing mentions in canon. Obscure characters, thy fan is Chanter!

Okay, thanks for letting us know! We had someone ask about it, and as we couldn't find mention of either character on the Pern wiki, we really weren't sure. :)

ETA: Per the link the other commenter dropped, it does seem Tekyl is more accurately spelled T'Kil, so we will change that one momentarily.

Wow, I fail! I thought they spelled it with a J for pronunciation's sake. Jeez, I need to do a canon reread, or something. *facepalms* Sorry.
