Seasons of Drabbles

Hi, everyone! Now that the dust has settled, we wanted to solicit your feedback on a few things. We also wanted to mention some planned changes for future rounds, as well as mention which things we do NOT plan to change (we still welcome feedback on these aspects of the exchange but are unlikely to change our minds). If you have feedback on something not mentioned in this post, that's welcome too.


Specific inquiries:

• The next round is set to run sometime between December and February. In practice, January or February is much more likely, though we'd be open to beginning nominations toward the end of December. Each round takes about a month from the beginning of nominations through author reveals. If you have a preference as to when the next round should run, please let us know! If all timings work for you, please let us know that as well! We don't promise to go with the majority opinion, but we'll do our best to choose a schedule that works for the mods and a decent percentage of participants.

• For the first round of this exchange, you could request/offer Any for characters. Since Any is defined differently between requests and offers (Any offers being for any character in the tagset and Any requests being for any character in the canon), this could be a little confusing. In order to make it less confusing, we're considering disallowing Any offers for character tags. Is this a good trade-off, or would it be better to give people a few more rounds to get used to the differences? (Please note we are not planning to change the definition of Any for requests.)

• We're considering letting in Worldbuilding as a character tag. Is this something you'd be interested in? Does your answer on this change if we keep Any offers for characters?

• Did the 48-hour anon period seem long enough? We think a week is much too long for a drabble exchange, but would be open to a 72-hour anon period instead.

Planned changes for upcoming rounds:

• We will be using moderated submissions for future rounds due to its convenience when we're checking basic things like length and completeness. Note that we do not check DNWs or other nitty-gritty stuff unless we have a reason to for that specific fic.

• We were originally planning to use the same tagset for all future rounds, but it's come to our attention that very large tagsets can become unwieldy. We are now planning to create a new tagset at the beginning of each year (every four rounds). Since we started in the fall, the current tagset will remain in place through 2022 (or for five rounds total).

Aspects of the exchange we do not plan to change:

• Character OR matching.

• The existence of the anon period.

• Requesting "Any" character means you are requesting any character in the canon (NOT the tagset).

The collection for the Fall 2021 round of Seasons of Drabbles is now live!

Please contact us if:

• You completed your assignment on time, but do not have a gift in the collection.
• Your gift is not for a fandom, character, and drabble type you requested (remember that requesting Any character = any character in the canon, unless DNW'd in your AO3 signup).
• Your gift contains a DNW from your AO3 signup.

If you're still working on a drabble, or start working on one later, you may post it to the collection during the anon period and beyond. The collection will remain open indefinitely.

Authors will be revealed 48 hours from now - a tiny period of secrecy for all your tiny fics.

We have three new pinch hits, and are reposting one initial pinch hit, for a total of four post-deadline pinch hits.

These are due at noon EDT on Saturday, September 25. We're willing to be flexible if needed, so please let us know if you'll need more time.

If you would like to claim a pinch hit, please comment to this post with the name/number of the pinch hit you would like. Make sure to include your AO3 username! Comments are screened.

If you do not currently have a gift in the collection, are not one of these pinch hits, and posted your assignment on time, please let us know! We don't believe we've missed anything, but if we've made a mistake, better to find out now than later.

If you DO currently have a gift in the collection and are one of these pinch hits, your existing gift is a treat. Treats are not upgraded to main gifts for this exchange.

We still have two initial pinch hits up for grabs. We're happy to grant an extension for these if needed.

No new pinch hits have come in, so the next batch won't be released until after the deadline has passed.

Assignments have been sent out a little early! Some notes:

• Initial pinch hits will be posted soon, so keep an eye on this comm.

• The deadline is September 18, 11:59pm Eastern time. If your assignment has not been submitted to AO3 by then, you will be defaulted.

• If your recipient did not request a fandom, character, and drabble type you offered, please contact the mods at seasonsofdrabbles AT gmail ASAP.

• If you need to default, please do so via the button on AO3.

• For the requirements your drabble must meet, please see our guidelines.

• If you write a drabble for a fandom in the tagset but it doesn't fit anyone's request, you may post it to the collection anyway, with no recipient.

Hi, everyone! As signups and nominations continue, we have some notes, and one query.

• As a reminder, if you request Any, you are requesting any character from the canon (NOT the tagset). Please make sure to only request Any if you are truly okay with receiving any character from the canon! Character DNWs will still be upheld for Any requests, but if you have multiple such restrictions, it would be easier and less confusing for your writer and the mods if you request specific characters instead.

• Due to the tagset issue we're encountering (more details HERE), we will be willing to add character tags to requests and offers after signups close. This is meant to accommodate people who sign up close to the deadline, but we will have a 12-hour grace period where anyone can ask to have character tags added. That being said, we will NOT be reopening signups once they have closed, so please make sure to get your signup in on time!

And our query, regarding the tagset:

• Dragonriders of Pern - If you nominated Tekyl or Jellim, or are otherwise familiar with the books, can you confirm that these characters actually exist in the canon? Could they be misspelled? (We suspect Tekyl may be T'Kul, but are unsure about Jellim.) These tags are currently part of the tagset, but will be removed if we receive no confirmation.

Signups are now open for the fall 2021 round of Seasons of Drabbles! They will be open until September 5, 11:59pm Eastern time (Countdown). Here's the app for browsing requests, as well. Note that it may not be up to date if it hasn't been rescraped.

• The tagset will remain open for nominations through the end of signups.

• You must request 3-10 fandoms with 1-20 characters and 1-7 drabble types each. Fandoms in your requests must be unique, but may be related (e.g., three Star Wars requests would be fine, as long as it was three separate Star Wars fandoms).

• If you wish, you may request Any for drabble type. This means you are open to receiving any of the 7 drabble types in the tagset.

• If you wish, you may request Any character. This means any character in the canon (NOT just the tagset). Please do not request Any unless you really are open to receiving any character from that canon.

Other:

• Some tags may not appear in the drop-down menu, but can still be used by copy-pasting from the tagset itself.

• If you encounter any issues while signing up, please let us know ASAP, as AO3 bugs can sometimes hit exchanges.

• If you need to let us know something about your signup (such as not wanting to be assigned to a specific other participant), please contact us via email (seasonsofdrabbles AT gmail) or the mod contact post.

  Nominations are now open for the Fall 2021 round of Seasons of Drabbles!

• The tagset is here. Nominations will remain open until signups close on September 5.

• You may nominate up to 10 fandoms with up to 10 characters each.

• The tagset will most likely be re-used for future rounds. Nominations will be wiped ahead of each new round to allow you to nominate new fandoms/characters for that round.

• All character nominations should be disambiguated, for example: Steve Rogers (Captain America (Movies)). Characters may be nominated in any/every fandom in which they appear.

• With some exceptions, both umbrella fandoms and sub-fandoms are allowed. For instance, you may nominate under Marvel Cinematic Universe or Star Wars - All Media Types. You may also nominate under sub-fandoms such as Thor (Movies) or Star Wars Original Trilogy. (Please remember that if you request Any for an umbrella fandom, you will be requesting any character who appears in any of the fandoms below the umbrella - NOT just characters in the tagset. So if you plan to request Any, you may want to request under a specific sub-fandom rather than the umbrella.) Please check the fandom notes section for exceptions prior to nominating!

• RPF is allowed. Nominated RPF characters must be famous in their own right, and must be 18+ for modern RPF.

• Crossovers are allowed. Crossover fandoms should be nominated as Fandom A/Fandom B. Character nominations for crossovers should be nominated as Character's Name (Fandom A/Fandom B). For example, if nominating Luke Skywalker for a Narnia/Star Wars crossover, the fandom would be nominated as Chronicles of Narnia/Star Wars, while the character would be nominated as Luke Skywalker (Narnia/Star Wars).

• Recursive fandoms are allowed. The required format is Recursive: Fic/Series title - Author. Recursive fandoms may be nominated under two circumstances: 1. the creator has posted a blanket permission statement, 2. you are the creator. In either case, please contact us when nominating so that we have the pertinent permissions. Characters nominated under recursive fandoms should be disambiguated with the title of the recursive fandom.

• Since we will be re-using the tagset, recursive fandoms will be removed on an as-needed basis between rounds (only if a blanket permission statement comes down, or the creator asks for it to be removed).

• Original Works are allowed. When nominating characters, please disambiguate with (Original Work). If an original character's gender is important to you, please specify it in your nomination.

• Original characters may also be nominated in existing fandoms. When nominating an original character within an existing fandom, please disambiguate with the name of the fandom. If an original character's gender is important to you, please specify it in your nomination.

Fandom notes:

• Do not nominate The Avengers (Marvel Movies). Any MCU character who appears only in The Avengers movies should be nominated under Marvel Cinematic Universe.

• For Disney's What If...?, characters should include the season/episode number in the disambiguation. E.g. if nominating Peggy from the first episode of s1, the character tag should be Peggy Carter (What If s1e1).

• There may be other special cases we are currently unaware of. If your fandom requires unique consideration, please reply to this post to let us know. Additionally, please keep an eye on the dreamwidth community, as we are likely to post clarification requests as nominations come in.
